The Pyrate Cyber News -- Free to all who ask
Past NQG Email Newsletters

We occasionally, though very sporadically, send out news of the pyrate world via the Cyber Seas.  These online broadsheets are free to all who ask to join the email crew, though they are intended as a supplement to our "No Quarter Given" magazine.  If you wish to join the email crew, or have news to share, just contact us.  Notices are sent out irregularly, as piratical news warrants (and we have time), but they tend to come out about once or twice per month.  Below are some past email notices.  Be aware, some links and information on older messages could be obsolete.

EXTREME MAKEOVER PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Extreme Pirate Makeover
    Mallory Update
        Where to Find NQG
            Piratical License Plates
                and more ...

Ahoy the crew,

This is a very quick message with some urgent news, as I'm in between
events trying to get the next issue of No Quarter Given finished up.
The producers of ABC's "Extreme Makeover" show need pirates for a
production this coming weekend in LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS. I know this is short notice, very short notice. Not only do they need pirates, but
they are hoping to obtain some sort of pirate ship vehicle, like one of
the parade vehicles some of the crews have. I do not know what kind of
recompense might be available for this. You will have to negotiate for
that. The shoot date for the demolition is this Sat. August 16.

Here is the explanation from Nadim Amiry, the producer:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One major element that is part of every episode is the demolition of the
original structure. The family that we will be building a house for in
Arkansas has a 10 year old boy who is suffering from Leukemia, but is
also a major fan of Pirates of the Caribbean and loves all things
pirates. To honor that, we thought it would be fun to create a pirate
themed demolition. Ideally, we would have some sort of pirate
re-enactment group, preferably one with a pirate ship vehicle and a
cannon that would make the initial attack on the house. I have begun to
reach out to different pirate groups in the region, but have not been
able to find anyone very close to the Little Rock area. I am hoping to
connect with a group either today or tomorrow that might be willing to
be involved in this episode. Please email or call me at the numbers
provided below.
Good luck to any of you who get involved with this. Let me know how it
goes and maybe we can write about it in No Quarter Given.
UPDATE ON MALLORY & McCALL
*******************************
In past NQG emails we told you about Mallory's back operation in Dec.
07, and his subsequent relapse and illness in January. This is why
musicians Mallory and McCall and the Skeleton Crew Pirate Band are not performing this season.
Below, Jan, aka "Mac the Wife" gives an account of what's happened since January.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So the weeks went by and, bit by bit Mallory began to make some small
improvements. But then he again started to feel worse and became
severely bent over in pain. Finally, about a week ago, the surgeon took yet another x-ray and
discovered that the vertebrae right above the fusion fractured and was
collapsing. The current opinion is that this had begun on a microscopic
level shortly after the December surgery, at least partly causing the
crisis in January, but we don't yet know, and perhaps never will.

Up until about a month ago, we were still hoping somehow to come to Ojai [Gold Coast Pirate Festival]. Sadly, that won't be the case. Just about the time the fair is happening they will be fusing his entire spine
below the neck (replacing the metal implant put in before, in what is
now being called a "failed surgery". He will be recuperating for from a
year to eighteen months! Chances are that the Skeleton Crew Pirate Band will be on a long hiatus. Mallory and I may try to do some light
recording during this period, perhaps with our two super side men Patch and Cannonball adding tracks, but for what seems like a very long time, the SCPB will not be performing live while its Captain gets ready to return, very straight and tall. We are hoping that others will continue
to sing our songs and buy our CDs!

In the meantime, we have been victims of a very nasty fraud. We have
been swindled out of all our money and probably our house unless the
money can be recovered in the next month or so. Briefly, we had hired
someone to invest the proceeds of a mortgage (all that we had) and
handle our money matters while Mallory was ill and my attention was
totally with him. Unfortunately, there was some bad blood in there
somewhere, and they just took our funds and stopped paying our
creditors. We can only hope that the law gets to them in time to save
our house. We are costume, musical instrument, prop, and collectable
pack rats and my moving us out of a cluttered two story Victorian house
while Mallory is in the hospital is a thought I simply cannot confront.

This is just a Reader's Digest version of our trials and normally I
wouldn't t cry in your soup, but so may nice folk have asked about us,
so we decided I should send out this letter.

If you are wondering how you can help, well, if you are a
multi-millionaire and want to support a couple of ol' pirates, give us a
buzz. Otherwise, tell your friends about our PiRATE PRiMiTiVE project:
body adornments inspired by the classic theatrical Caribbean pirates.
All are hand-made and most are suitable for all sexes.
If you like, link to us at _www. MalloryandMcCall. com/PiratePrimitive. _
Working on these unusual pieces has helped to make us a tiny bit saner
and we are proud of the results. Moonstruck and No Quarter Given also
sell them at various events.

We want to thank you all for your care and interest. And don't worry.
Though we have a long and difficult sail ahead, in time we'll make it
'round the horn.

Cheers!
Jan

MID-MAY PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Rum & Cigar Tasting
   Vote for Studio City Tattoo
       Corsairs Call It Quits
           Bus Pirates Last Episode
               and more ...

Ahoy the crew,

We had a grand time at PyrateCon in New Orleans.  It was wonderful to see soooooo many pirates in one place (heard there were over 1500 attendees).  The parade was terrific - a massed throng of pirates marching down Bourbon Street, with huge crowds of spectators on the streets and in the balconies.

It was great during the day, with great speakers giving their presentations, and marauding musicians wandering about: Rusty Cutlass, Skip Henderson & John Blakemore, Cindy Warner, Blackbeard's Crew, and others (often playing right in front of the No Quarter Given booth).

Meeting up with old and new friends from the four points of the compass was the best.  We met many of our subscribers.   In the halls, on the streets, and at the various events all the pirates and the towns people were open and welcoming. The nighttime parties and events were overwhelming.  Just about anytime we wanted to relax, we'd head to Pirates Alley Cafe, and there'd be several pirates sitting around.

The decor and props in the registration lobby outside the vendors room set the mood. There was a lot of great swag to be had in the two vendors rooms.

It was obvious that the committee working, planning, and promoting PyrateCon 2008 had worked their tails off. You deserve a hearty huzzah, and a long drink of rum.  Look for a much more detailed report in the next No Quarter Given magazine.  Meanwhile, I've posted some of my photos on the NQG MySpace page at:  http://www.myspace.com/no_quartergiven.  There's a slide show on my profile page that anyone should be able to look at.  If you are registered with MySpace then you can get into the "PICS" section to see captions.

After returning from New Orleans, next weekend they tried to burn us out with flames and smoke, and tried to swelter us with the baking sun, but the Cutthroats of Corona persevered.

The captain and I were heartened to see many pirates at the CHOC Pirate Party on May 2.  This was a fundraiser for  the Children's Hospital of Orange County. .Many of the actors from Pirates of the Caribbean were there in force, autographing and posing.  A big black limo with pirate flags on the fenders arrived to whisk the pirates off to visit with the kids at the hospital.  When the pirates returned, the party began, in the streets of downtown Anaheim -- music from the Doxie Chicks and Mommie's Little Monsters, raffles, auctions, vendors, and more.    We are told by Seawolf (Matt Stone), one of the captains of this event, that they raised over $4,000.  We raise our tankards to all those who made this a fun (and fundraising) event.

Ahoy the crew,

We are putting the finishing touches on the L.O.R.E. workshops for this weekend. Hope to see many of you there. Learn how to act, walk, talk, dance, and dress like a pirate (also how to fire a flintlock, bang on a drum, navigate like a true sailor, and play some of the pirate games like those at the recent Buccaneer Ball). Things will go on, rain or shine (local forecasts call for 30% light showers). If it is too rainy to sit outdoors, there are indoor areas to hold classes. Visit our NQG calendar page for more details on the pirate classes: http://www.noquartergiven.net/calendar.htm

UPDATE ON THE
PIRATE LASS IN DISTRESS
IN ECUADOR
************************
Some of you wanted to help Linda Lea, the pirate lass stuck in Ecuador on her sailboat. But in doing so, someone uncovered this letter and editor's response in the Feb. 2008 "Latitude 38" (a West Coast magazine for the sailing community):
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*I BELIEVE THAT THE SKIPPER OWES US $884 EACH*
I just returned from Ecuador after answering a Crew Wanted ad posted by a woman skipper. It turns out that the gal is, in my opinion, a nut job and a drunk. Matt Olson and I answered the ad, and the woman said that if we came ASAP, she'd get us to Mexico, as there was a weather window. To make a long story short, I had to buy a return ticket to the United States at a cost of $884. Matt, however, is stranded in Canoa, Ecuador. I believe the woman at least owes us return airfare. After all, it was her fault that we didn't leave on schedule.
Dave Hohman
Planet Earth
>
/Dave --- We're sorry that things didn't turn out for you and Matt, but we do our best to warn everyone that the world of Crew Lists --- like the world of internet dating --- is as unregulated as it gets. That means everyone has to be diligent in vetting all possibilities, and always expect the worst while hoping for the best./
/If we were looking for a crew position and the skipper told us to hurry from the United States to Ecuador because there was a "weather window",
that would be the end of it. After all, what kind of weather window would allow you to fly to Ecuador, provision and go through the boat, complete the time-consuming clearing out process, and then sail 1,500 miles to Mexico? You can't let your dreams of adventure run roughshod over your common sense. Similarly, your complaint that you didn't "leave on schedule" is a bit naďve. What cruising boat ever left on schedule?/
/As for your opinion that the skipper is a "nut job and a drunk," we can only imagine what she'd say about you. Maybe you're right, but there's no way for us to take sides in 'he said, she said' situations, particularly when we don't know any of the people involved./
/Let this be a cautionary tale for all --- before anyone flies off to a distant port to join an unknown boat and skipper, they should, at the very least, get recent letters of recommendation from previous crew, as well as a report from neighbors on the general condition of the boat and captain. If the skipper looking for crew isn't willing to provide these, you've got to be skeptical of how good an opportunity it is. And no matter how glowing the report on the skipper and boat, we'd always assume that things might go bust and that we may have to pay for to get home./
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[So we contacted Linda Lea about this, and here is her response:]
Please let it be known; I quit hard liquor over 3 years ago but have been seen having a toast on a special occasion. As far as a nut case couldn't that be one who that would chose to live upon the ocean for close to 10 years in lieu of a house with a rose garden. I am a certified radio instructor, ham, advanced diver, and have more certificates from more colleges than I can remember from the past 5o years of my life.
Also I lack the physical strength and let's admit it, I honestly do not desire to be mechanically inclined,... However, I excel at most electronic types of instrumentation, read stars, as well as have a very good sense of direction in general. As far as the name "Scatter Sally" this was bestowed on me by one of my closed and dearest of friends, Sir Robin St. Graves. (Whom I believe to have referred me to you.)
I would also like to say that I appreciate the rebuttal from the magazine. Getting crew from the Internet is like blind dating. I've been on this ship nearly 10 years and I figure I can cut a little slack now and then .. but an order should always be followed (It could even save a life)
I did put off a canvas job and spend my own good money to meet this fellow at the airport in Guayaquil (5 Hours away) by bus, because he was afraid to travel alone. I also gave them (Dave & Matt) the first 3 days off because he (Dave) ate or DRANK something that didn't agree with him, while I paid $500 (a ticket here in agreement for help I can back up with old emails) for the young one (Matt) to help me with the boat, when the big guy got sick I handed to young one $20 to go to the beach with THREE girls... I watched them drink cases of beer at a time, somewhat normal for guys when they get here.... I don't like beer, been off hard liquor for years, etc. And, also please let it be known, after more than 2 months on crutches and antibiotics I am totally Clean and Sober. So, you decide. I also have references from past crew. Thank for you reconsideration. I'm just an old girl who'd really like to be done with all this so I can go Home.
Sincerely, Linda Lea Stephens aka Scatter Sally
UPDATE ON MALLORY
*********************
Back in February we told you about the ills of Mallory of Mallory and McCall. Here is an update on his condition from his wife Jan:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Mallory is recovering very slowly from the spine operation and the staph infection that followed. Most of his time is spent in bed, usually sleeping. He still has bouts of severe pain and is always somewhat in pain. But he is getting better day by day. And he has just started on physical therepy which helps. I feel like I have my man back again! There had been some pretty scary times. He has ventured out a couple of times to drive me to the store or post office nearby. He waits in the car in his plastic carapace (my name for a body brace he has to wear) and then we come home. This is a big step. He has also begun to help editing the Pirate Primitive site as my spelling and syntax needs a load of help. But most of the time, as before, he just wants to stay in bed quietly."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Due to Mallory's condition, Mallory & McCall will be unable to perform at any of the Spring faires, unless his health improves greatly. Meanwhile, their finances are becoming more straitened. Jan is trying to make ends meet with her new jewelry business, PiRATE PRiMiTiVES. She has many new items posted on the website.
NEW PIRATE IN THE
ROGUES GALLERY AT DISNEYLAND
*********************************
Here is the article that was posted at the broken link I gave out a couple of emails ago:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Pirate’s Life for She!
JENIFER GREENWELL OF ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA, JOINS
THE CREW INSIDE ‘PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN’ AT DISNEYLAND
ANAHEIM, Calif. – January 29, 2008 – A new name and face are joining the ranks of the pirates whose images appear inside the entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean in Disneyland.
Alongside such legends of the high seas as Captain Jack Sparrow and Barbossa, a specially created portrait of Jenifer Greenwell of St. Petersburg, Florida, now appears along the wall where queuing guests approach the dock to board the attraction. Jenifer was selected at random as the grand prize winner from hundreds of thousands of entries in the “Become a Disney Pirate” sweepstakes conducted in connection with the DVD release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Her likeness as “Mademoiselle Greenwell” in pirate costume will stand alongside the others and be viewed by millions of Disneyland guests.
Jenifer’s pirate journey, following the news of her big win, took her to the headquarters of Walt Disney Imagineering in Glendale, California. There, in May 2007, she she was sketched as a pirate in full costume by Imagineer artist Jim Crouch. She also was given a tour of Imagineering, which few non-Imagineers ever get to experience.
She returned to California in July when, in the Pirate Suite of the Disneyland Hotel, Crouch and other Imagineers showed her the original artwork that Crouch would paint as a four-foot-tall mural on the wall of the attraction. (The other notable pirates in this Pirates of the Caribbean rogues gallery were also painted by Jim Crouch.)
The art was unveiled the morning of Tuesday, January 29, in a special presentation featuring Jenifer, Jim Crouch and some of the pirate denizens of New Orleans Square in Disneyland. “Mademoiselle Greenwell” will remain on view in “Pirates of the Caribbean” through June 2009.
In addition, Jenifer was given a VIP tour of Disneyland Resort during her January 29 visit. She got to meet and pose for photos with Disneyland pirates. And she took home the original “Mademoiselle Greenwell” artwork developed for the attraction.

PIRATES ON L.A. INK
*******************
Mad Eye Mitch showed up in the episode of L.A. Ink entitled "Corey's Dilemna". It first aired on TLC on March 6, but perhaps you can catch another airing of it. You can watch Mitch get his special "pop-eye" tattoo on his elbow. Or ask Mitch to show it to you when you run into him. Ask him to "pop" the eye out.

WYRD WALKS WILL TAKE A PIRATE WALK
***************************************
[London, UK] Wyrd Walks will be holding a Pirate History Walk on Sat 15th March.
We will be meeting outside Greenwich Cutty Sark DLR at 4pm and ending at Wapping around 6pm. There will be a short hop by DLR between locations so you will need to have a travel card or equivalent for this. The walk itself will still only cost Ł5.
Ideally those attending should let me know, and give contact details, so I could get in touch with you in case of cancelation (given current unpredictable weather conditions).
Otherwise just turn up. wyrdwalks@yahoo.co.uk

MID-LATE FEBRUARY PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Pirate Lass in Distress in Ecuador
Stephin Clarc Update
and more ...

'ello me Hearties,

We had a grand time at the Port Royal Grand Buccaneer's Ball last Saturday in Yucca Valley, CA. There was some great swag in the Silent Auction. I was able to get a POTC III stunt crew t-shirt, but the special POTC cast Pyrat Rum XO bottle with a Jerry Bruckheimer label went for many, many doubloons. Hope they do this again ... all those eager young Marines from 29 Palms were fun to gamble with, and to teach them the various games pirates played. They loved learning how to play Liar's Dice, and were excited to show their barrack buddies how to play the game.

Another charity high-toned to-do is coming up in Northern California ... the Pirate Ball, on March 21, in San Francisco. This one is to benefit Children's Hospital and Research Center Oakland. I hear it too will have an auction of POTC items and other things pirates would be interested in. See our NQG calendar page for more details: http://www.noquartergiven.net/calendar.htm

Also, don't forget that the Spring edition of L.O.R.E. is coming March 15 & 16 with it's weekend of classes. Learn how to act, walk, talk and dress like a pirate (also how to fire a flintlock, bang on a drum, navigate like a true sailor, and play some of the pirate games like those at the recent Buccaneer Ball). Again, visit our NQG calendar page for more details.

PIRATE LASS IN DISTRESS
IN ECUADOR
************************
Robin Grattidge (aka Robin St. Graves) told us of a friend of his in trouble:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A friend of mine, Linda Lea Stephens (piratically known at "Scatter") is currently on her 50' ketch in Ecuador, alone and injured. There is no Red Cross there.
She sustained an injury to her leg (hit by a motorcycle) and has need for someone to take care of her.
Sending out an s.o.s., so to speak.
She would like to be able to sail her boat back to the Sea of Cortez or San Diego, but can't do it all by her onesies, especially since she's injured.
She can be reached at lindalea23@yahoo.com <mailto:lindalea23@yahoo.com> or lindaleasails@yahoo.com <mailto:lindaleasails@yahoo.com>
She's also on yahoo i.m.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In talking more with Robin, we found out that Linda sailed to Ecuador with her boyfriend, who split on her. She tried to hire some other folks as sail crew, but they were "true pirates" and she had to fire them. Then a motorcycle hit her. So she is really desperate. Her visa has run out, and she needs to get out of Ecuadorian waters. She is on her last leg (literally) and running low on funds too.
Robin says the nearest airport is Guayaquil, but he is unsure if that is where she is docked.
Perhaps there is some adventurous and generous soul or two amongst you who would could fly down to Ecuador and help sail this boat home. You will need to have some sailing skills. I have photos Robin sent me if you'd like to know more about the sail boat. He also has copies of the last inspection report, so you would know the boat is seaworthy. If interested in helping out, and you'd like to see the boat photos or the inspection report, just contact me.

HIRING HOLLYWOOD COSTUMERS
AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS
********************************
Last time we gave you information about hiring out of work costumers for your own pirate costuming. However, we may have mislead you a bit. Mary Fleming tells us "The Costumer's Yard sale was put on by the Costumers Local 705 of the IATSE. And specifically by the hardworking Jennifer Michaud (also a member of the Costumer's Guild West), who organized the entire thing. I, also, am a union costumer, who worked the sale, & although I heard that the Women's Guild was participating. I have no idea who they are. If anyone wants to hire a union Costumer for private work, I suggest that they contact Local 705. I'll get back to you on the specifics."
We'll let you know when she gives us more details.

Greetings me darlin's and shipmates,

Hope you are having a grand Valentine's Day. Thanks to the Maritime Pirates, you can listen to a pirate valentine song on streaming audio for "It's A Pirate Valentine" at (click the link):
http://www.maritimepirates.com/ValentineSong.html

For California pirates there some grand events happening this weekend. If you have a sweetie, come along with him or her. If not, then come be with pirate friends (or make new friends) and have a great time nevertheless.

On Saturday night (Feb. 16th) you'll find me out in the high desert of Southern California, in Yucca Valley, running the gaming tables at the Port Royal Grand Buccaneer Ball. Come try yer hand at sweat cloth, shove ha'penny, liar's dice, poch (early version of poker), or many others. Pouches of doubloons and jewels to gamble with will be available. Capt. Ned (Gail Selinger, author of "The Idiot's Guide to Pirates"), Philistina d'Morte, and a few other rogues will be helping me. Our trusty mate, Shanghai Brown, is hosting the Port Royal Grand Buccaneer Ball. This is a benefit for Phoenix Project West, who provide retreats for returning combat veterans and their spouses, so they can reconnect. Come in yer fanciest garb. Pirate photographer Tiger Lee will be on hand to make yer portrait. "There Be Pirates!" will provide music to dance. To spice things up, there will be sword dancing and bellydancing too. http://www.phoenixprojectwest.org/

You can start the weekend earlier, by partying the night before with The Pirates Charles. Celebrate Valentines Day in Pirate ...A day late and a dubloon short... GET RUM SOAKED. Come to the most Piratical Bar in LA ... the Redwood Bar and Grill at 8pm When: this Friday night February 15th 2008! Where: The Redwood Bar316 W.2nd Street LA, CA 90012 Why: To see the Pirates Charles band play and kick some pirate ARSE!.... and Come and Drink sum rum $2 shots....! RENFAIRE & PIRATE MUSICIAN
SHOT IN THE HAND
*****************************
Stephin Clarc, formerly of the musical duo "Silar and Clarc" (seen at many West Coast and Southwest RenFaires), was shot in the right hand in New Orleans. As a musician, his hands are his bread and butter. As of Feb. 13, he was still in the hospital, and was scheduled to get a skin graft. We currently do not have an address for sending well wishes, but thoughts and prayers are requested by his ex-wife Krystal Rains of Enchanted Devas.

OTHER PIRATE MUSICIANS NEED HELP
***********************************
Capt. Mal de Mer (Mallory) of the Skeleton Crew Pirate Band had back surgery in early December. Subsequently he's been hospitalized with infections and other set backs. Though he's back at home now, he's seems not to be improving quickly. Well wishers can send mail or emails (it's best not to call): Mallory & McCall, PO Box 191084, Los Angeles, CA 90019, malloryandmccall@yahoo.com
You can help out by purchasing Skeleton Crew Pirate Band CDs, and jewelry that his wife Jan makes. You can see Jan's jewelry at the Pirate Primitives website: http://www.malloryandmccall.com/PiratePrimitive.html
The recent necklaces I saw are VERY colourful and attractive, with some real interesting beads. Very reminiscent of the necklaces worn by Tia Dalma and other pirates in POTC. Many of the beads she is using are one-of-a-kind. Every necklace is unique and hand-knotted using classic maritime knotwork designs.
If you will be at the Estrella Wars in Florence, Arizona today through Sunday, my captain, Michael MacLeod is there with our No Quarter Given booth. He has over a dozen of Jan's latest necklaces and belt dangles to display and sell at our booth. All proceeds from the necklaces are going straight to Jan and Mallory.
You can also see Jan's necklaces at Enchanted Deva's in North Hollywood, California.

LAFITTE'S RETURN
*****************
[Captain Phleabag of the Jolly Garogers tells us:] Greetings ye Scurvey Pirate Crew, from THE PIRATES FOR THE PRESERVATION OF NEW ORLEANS MUSIC (PPNOM) and THE JOLLY GAROGERS! We thank you all so much for visiting http://www.ppnom.org  and purchasing the two pirate compilation CDs LAFITTE'S REVENGE, Volumes 1 & 2. As of 01/25/2008, we have received over $ 1200 in sales which will go directly to the benefit of the public school music programs in New Orleans Louisiana. That is all thanks to YOU, most
generous Pirate Crew! Please keep spreading the word about the CDs and the PPNOM Charity, we can not do this without you!
http://www.ppnom.org/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Jamaica Rose: I recently bought both CDs of the "Lafitte's Return" collection. They are a great sampling of the various pirate musical groups. Some selections I was familiar with, but many more were either from bands I was unfamiliar with, or new compositions from familiar bands. Sure, there's a few tracks I don't really care for, but only a very few. Over all, this is a great collection, and the money goes to a good cause. Look for a review of this album in an upcoming issue of No Quarter Given.
HIRING HOLLYWOOD COSTUMERS
AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS
********************************
Last weekend we went to a gigantic yard sale of Hollywood costumers and other professionals just trying to get by. They were handing out information on hiring such professionals for personal use. Though I know the writer's strike has just concluded, there may still be a lag time before costumers will be called back in. So you still might be able to hire a Hollywood costumer to make you a grand pirate costume.
From the Women's Guild of America (that struck me as sexist, but I
guess it's a holdover from when costumers, set designers, and makeup
artists were mostly women) --please contact: Dena Allen, delunaco@aol.com, 818-516-5410
They suggest hiring set decorators, costume designers, make-up artists,
graphic designers and others to work their magic in your homes, offices,
closets, gardens and lives.
--Decorate children's bedrooms into a fantasy world
--Get make-overs and costumes made for you.
--Turn a party into an EVENT.
They also offer:
--Green design
--real-estate staging
--spring spruce-up
--wardrobe/closet makeovers
--office organizing
--adult/senior advocacy, companionship
--child transport/logistics
--errands
--meal delivery
--de-cluttering
--house, animal, plant sitting
--veterinary appointments
SISTERS OF THE SEA
& THE PRIVATEER
INCREDIBLE PIRATE SCULPTURES
*******************************
Erik Christianson has created a couple of incredible bronzes of pirate subjects. Look for "Sisters of the Sea" and "The Privateer" at his website: http://www.masterbronzes.com/ (click on "Gallery Pieces")
They are from limited editions of 30, and are still available for sale.
Erik tells us: "the 2 pirate pieces are not commissions but they were inspired by Mr. [Woodson K.] Woods a close friend of my father who lives in Hawaii. He saw a photo of the first bronze I ever created 20 years ago which was a buccaneer I titled "The Privateer''. He called me and was interested in purchasing it but unfortunately it had been stolen some years ago. I thought this was a great opportunity to create a new version of the piece with no obligation for him to buy. When I was finished he purchased 3 and of course I was thrilled. Yes all my work is always for sale and are of a limited edition. Both "The Privateer " and "Sisters of the Sea" are a limited edition of 30. I don't have an inventory so each piece is hand cast one at a time and worked out personally by myself all the way to the patina. I have always been fascinated by the history of the Spanish main and of all the pirates and ships, fashions and weapons of that era all the way up to Jean Lafitte. Half the fun of creating the sculpture is doing the research and my favorite painter has always been Howard Pyle. I will be creating more compositions of pirates in the future. I have never enjoyed myself more than when I am working on this subject."
When the buccaneer's invaded Guayaquil many made friends with the local senoritas. Here's an account from de Lussan's "Journal of a Voyage":
"... several of our men made friends with the ladies among our prisoners and, without being violent, solicited their favors and made them lose ... whatever aversion they may previously have had for the French nation before they knew them."
MID-JANUARY PIRATE UPDATE
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Steve Bartell Memorials
   The Pirate Code on NGC
      Greenwood County Hist. Soc. Talk
         Charleton Heston "Treasure Island" DVD
            and much more ...
Greetings Shipmates,
We, and a lot of other fellow sea rovers, had a rollickin' time last Saturday night at the Pre-PyrateCon/Pre-Pirate Invasion Party.  On the sand, under the stars, listening to the surf nearby, it was perfect for a mid-Winter rendezvous of rogues.  Though brisk, it wasn't too cold -- just enough to allow pirates to show off their fancy coats that are usually too warm at summer events.  Several of the actors from the various Pirates of the Caribbean movie were there.  Four of the contestants from Pirate Master were on hand:  Kendra, Laurel, Azymyth, and Jupiter.  Kapt. Kula's Pyrat Party band warmed up the party with his fun pirate music, then handed it over to the highly-energized and crazed Pirates Charles.  Pirates kicked it up and danced on the sand around the bonfires.  Familiar pirate movies and episodes of Pirate Master played on a large screen behind the musicians.  A promotional DVD about PyrateCon was played.  If this is any sign, it bodes well that PyrateCon will be a very fun event.
Speaking of PyrateCon, in the just mailed out November/December issue of
No Quarter Given, a retraction is needed:  On pg. 8, Mitch Toles has NOT left the PyrateCon organization.
And yes, an issue (November/December 2007) of No Quarter Given was mailed a week ago.  The January/February 2008 issue will be out in a few weeks.  We decided to skip the March/April, May/June, July/August, and September/October 2007 issues, rather than try to catch up.  We have moved everyone's subscription up by four issues (eight months) so you will get all the issues you paid for.
ANOTHER HAS GONE TO FIDDLER'S GREEN
STEVE BARTELL
***********************************
January 26, 2008: Barnacle Bart's Pirate Pub Wake
Long Beach, CALIFORNIA  9:00pm - Midnight. Barnacle Bart aka Private Hell, real name: STEVE BARTELL, sailed away to Fiddler's Green Saturday January 5, 2008. His passing saddens many that knew him, but all that did are happy he was with us, though we wish we could have had more time together. Steve was a real Renaissance man, graphic artist, writer, poet, musician, actor, comedian. He was a member of the Fool's Guild, performed as a drummer/percussionist with the American Civil War era musical troupe, The Band Of The California Battalion and was the official drummer/percussionist with Kapt. Kula's Pyrat Party Band. The KKPP Band will miss him dearly and want to honor him by declaring their next gig (one that Steve was scheduled to play on) his wake. There are other memorials planned as well, but I don't think all of Steve's friends could fit in one room. Come share your memories, photos etcetera of Steve with us. Dress as a pirate and toast our comrade and friend Barnacle Bart with his favorite, Sailor Jerry's Rum.
    This gathering will be at our home port pub, the Pike Restaurant & Bar, 1836 E. 4th St (one block west of Cherry Ave) Long Beach, CA 90802 (562) 437-4453 Limited Parking Arrive Early. Fine Food, Full Bar, RUM! 21+ Cover $7.
Monday, January 21, 2008, at 08P EST (repeats at 11P)
With little direction aside from a survivors testimony and a cryptic clue, salvage expert Barry Clifford embarks on the search of a lifetime to uncover the near 300 year old wreck site of the Whydah Galley and its four and a half tons of treasure in The Pirate Code. The special brings to life Black Sam Bellamy - a legend during the Golden Age of Piracy and follows one mans quest to resurrect Black Sam's ship from its watery grave.
GREENWOOD LOCAL HISTORICAL TALK
ON PIRATE HISTORY JAN. 20th
Greenwood, South Carolina
*******************************
    Greenwood County Historical Society presents “Pirates of the Carolinas” at its 2:30 p.m. meeting Sunday. The program will be in the fellowship hall of Main Street United Methodist Church. Accounts of such maritime rogues as Blackbeard, Stede Bonnet, Anne Bonney and others will be recounted.
    Principal speaker will be Mike Brown, of Charleston, author and professional presenter on the lore of coastal waters off both Carolinas. Brown recently was featured on a program produced by South Carolina Educational Television, a program that had its premiere in November. A part of ETV’s “Carolina Stories” series, it was titled “Pirates of the Carolinas.”
    Brown attended the College of Charleston, where he cultivated his interest in piracy in general, and more specifically, in the “Golden Age of Piracy” (1670-1700). His initial research culminated in the development of Charleston’s popular Pirates and Buccaneers Walk, which focuses on pirates who prowled the waters off the “Port City.”
PUSH FOR CHARLTON HESTON "TREASURE ISLAND" DVD
**********************************************
[John Bourdage wrote to TNT as follows:]
Sirs;
Just a short note to ask if there are any plans on releasing your film "Treasure Island", starring Charlton Heston and Christian Bale, onto DVD in the near future?  This has to be the best version ever filmed and I'm surprised it hasn't been released yet.  Would love to see it released all remastered, uncut, and with all the goodies that comes with DVDs.
I absolutely love this film and would love to see this happen and to get my mitts on a copy.
Thank you for your time.
John Bourdage
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ANSWER:
Dear Mr. Bourdage. Thanks very kindly for your query about Treasure Island DVD release, and your gracious compliments on the film. I thought I’d respond myself, since you had so many nice things to say. I agree with you – it’d be wonderful to have this film released on DVD, unfortunately Turner (now a subsidiary of Time Warner has (so far as I’m aware) no plans to do so, and since it was originally filmed for TV (Ted Turner’s fledging TNT network, back in 1989) it’s probably not worth the considerable expense of doing so now. Sad to say. Thanks very kindly for your sentiments, however, and for taking the time to contact us.
 Kind regards,
 Fraser C. Heston
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[John Bourdage suggests those interested to contact TNT:]
tnt@turner.com
Maybe if we can all get to emailing these folks demanding this excellent film be released onto DVD, we will see it happen. Get everybody ... to start writing TNT to request this film be released onto DVD. They will listen if enough of us get involved and contact TNT. You can also go to TCMs website to request movies. Request this film be released onto DVD. The more we do this the better chance we have to seeing it through to a positive conclusion.
PIRATES RECOVER PLUNDER
************************
From the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Dated 11/29/07
http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/thebigblog/archives/126888.asp
    The Seattle Seafair Pirates appear to be the latest victims of a criminal trying to profit from stolen metals.
    Earlier this month, the six gold-plated cannon barrels from their ship, the Moby Duck, were found dumped in West Seattle. Seattle Seafair Pirate Mark Jensen said besides the rust that damaged the six barrels, someone tried to scrape off the plating on some and discarded the barrels after realizing they were steel, not brass.
    The barrels were stolen in October from a since-demolished warehouse near Qwest Field where their World War II amphibious landing craft was stored.
    Among other items, copper wires were also stolen from the warehouse and flagpoles were stolen from a Lincoln Town Car the pirates use during parades.
    Jensen said the pirates found a saw, wire and pipe cutters among tools left in the warehouse.
    The Seattle police burglary unit was investigating the crime, but additional information was not immediately available Thursday.
Metal theft has increased in the past few years as thieves targeted public utilities and private businesses for loads of copper, brass or aluminum, costing taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars, according to law enforcement officials.
    Jensen said all the gold-plated cannons, which were installed on the ship in 1970, need to be replated at a cost of about $3,500.
The pirates have received about $1,000 in donations and plan to give a reward to the Seattle man who found the cannons Friday.
DIGITAL PLAYGROUND ANNOUNCES
OFFICIAL TITLE FOR PIRATES II: STAGNETTI'S REVENGE
*******************************
Film is the Sequel to the Blockbuster Adult Feature "Pirates"
    January 7, 2008 --- VAN NUYS, Calif. --- In a much-anticipated announcement, Digital Playground's Samantha Lewis and Joone revealed today that the next installment of the groundbreaking Pirates feature, Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge will begin production in early 2008. Digital Playground contract superstar Jesse Jane® returns as renowned pirate hunter and first-mate Jules. New additions to the Pirates II cast include Digital Playground contract stars: Shay Jordan(TM), Adrianna Lynn(TM), Stoya(TM) and Katsuni. Evan Stone returns as rogue pirate hunter Capt. Edward Reynolds, and reprising his role as renegade pirate Capt. Victor Stagnetti is Tommy Gunn. Directed by Joone, and produced by Samantha and Joone, the film will be released by Digital Playground throughout the world in Fall 2008.
    Samantha Lewis, Digital Playground CEO states, "Joone and I are very excited. The 'Pirates II' script is brilliant and promises to exceed all expectations. Another epic feature in the making, this film will dazzle existing fans and captivate new ones."
    Joone comments, "'Pirates II' has creatively turned out to be a much bigger film than the first one. We have been working on just the visual FX alone for more than a year. The fans will not be disappointed."
    Pirates was hailed as the largest and most comprehensive movie in the history of adult films. The most expensive adult effort yet produced, the feature was lauded with awards from every associated panel, notably a record-breaking 13 from AVN to date, including Best Selling and Best Renting title honors. Building upon the success of the film within its traditional market, the studio received an additional R-rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, thus gaining mainstream recognition and distribution, making a theatrical release of a Pirates sequel imminent.       Whydah Shipwreck Updates
         Help Raise the Sails
                and much more ...
Greetings Shipmates,
Hope you all had a very joyous Holiday season, and will have a great, prosperous New Year.  It's been a while since I've written, so I have a ship-load of news for ya.
A lot of you have been writing asking if we've capsized here at No Quarter Given.  We did run aground for a time being, but have broken free again.  Due to a complex of events (lost my helper, computer problems, a very busy show schedule), and personal situations (the big one being my mother broke her hip, has moved in, and I took over the care of her many animals and my invalid brother, and we are preparing her big rambling house for sale).  Despite my having left the day job of teaching, all these other demands have kept NQG from getting back on schedule.  The last issue that has come out was the Jan/Feb 2007 issue.  Rather than trying to catch up, we are going to skip the March through Sept. 07 issues.  The next issue (should be mailed out on Tuesday) will be the Nov/Dec 2007 issue.  We will move everyone's expiration date up by 8 months (4 issues), so everyone will get the six issues they have paid for.
We did have a very successful L.O.R.E. weekend of workshop classes last October ... at least it was successful on Saturday.  Then overnight the winds from Hell broke out, and blew all Sunday, continuing all the next week (leading to the Fire Storm of 2007).  Still we were able to move indoors and hold modified versions of most of the Sunday pirate classes before the park was closed for safety concerns.  We will host L.O.R.E. classes again March 15th and 16th.
http://www.renaissanceinfo.com/lore.html
We are putting together our schedule for 2008, and are excited by our plans.  One of the first events you'll find NQG at is the Estrella SCA War (Feb. 12-18, Florence, AZ).  In April, we will return to New Orleans for PyrateCon 2008, where we will be speakers and vendors.  Starting in June, we plan a long trip up and down the West Coast, first going up to 2nd Annual Northern California Pirate Festival, then following the tall ship festivals from Victoria, BC, to Tacoma, WA, back to Port Alberni, BC, then later to Southern California tall ship festivals (Oxnard, Los Angeles, and San Diego).  We will still appear at a lot of the usual events in Southern California.  For details on these and lots more events, visit our "On the Horizon" events page at: http://www.noquartergiven.net/calendar.htm
WHYDAH SHIPWRECK UPDATES
A selection of artifacts from the Whydah collection is presently in a nationwide block-buster tour, entitled "Real Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship", under the auspices of The National Geographic Society and Arts and Exhibitions International. There have been many changes at the home museum in Provincetown, the Expedition Whydah Sea-Lab and Learning Center. Many new and exciting displays have been created.
http://www.whydah.com/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
News from the Expedition Whydah newsletter:
   Equally important—if not more so-- are new developments in our ongoing efforts to recover the treasures of the Whydah!
   With the acquisition of the Vast Explorer and improved sensing gear, we have undertaken increasingly sophisticated underwater archaeological testing work over the past few years. As a result, we have learned that the Whydah site is far more complex than originally thought.
   These efforts bore fruit this summer. Indeed, Barry describes this as the most exciting season he’s had since his original discovery of the Whydah in 1984!
   Beginning last May, we spent virtually  the entire dive season on an area that was perhaps ten feet in diameter, but which held an extraordinarily high concentration of artifacts.
   Aside from hundreds of other artifacts
such as coins and concreted pistols, we recovered three cannon, a huge concretion--weighing nearly 11,000 pounds--that contains at least seven more cannon, and one of the ship’s stoves. This stove may be the actual “caboose” Henry David Thoreau described in his book Cape Cod.
   And we are by no means finished with this ten-foot area!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
More from the Expedition Whydah newsletter:
   As you may have noticed, we have given the website an “Extreme Makeover”—we are not only uploading some of the most popular pages from the past—as well as a vastly expanded web store <http://store.whydah.com/> — but the future will bring even more
exciting and interactive features!
   Barry has also completed two new  books for The National Geographic Society—Real Pirates, a companion volume for the Real Pirates exhibition, as well as a childrens’ book that is due out in March. Also in production are a multi-media DVD and other multi-media and print projects.
BUCCANEER'S REALM
*****************
Benerson Little has followed up his first pirate book "Sea Rover's Practice" with "The Buccaneer's Realm: Pirate Life on the Spanish Main, 1674-1688". It was published Oct. 2007, and is available through mainstream book sources. I'm in the middle of reading it now. It paints a detailed picture of what the Spanish Main was like during the late 17th century, illustrating the life of the buccaneers, the Spanish they preyed on, and other inhabitants of the Caribbean. Look for a review of this excellent book in an upcoming NQG issue.
DISNEY TO FILM POTC 4 IN SPAIN?
We recently received the following article in an email:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

From 20minutoes.es http://www.20minutos.es/noticia/327020/0/piratas/caribe/lepe/ <http://www.20minutos.es/noticia/327020/0/piratas/caribe/lepe/> (translated by AltaVista)

"The North American producer, Walt Disney Pictures, is negotiating
with the City Council of Lepe so that next autumn the natural place
Arrow of New Shade can be used for filming the new Pirates of the
Caribbean, according to an official notice.

The Arrow of New Shade, 18 kilometers from the coast, is considered
by Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films a suitable place
for the filming of a good part of the images for the new pirate
adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow and his companions Will Turner and
Elizabeth Swann.

In addition to the beach of New Shade, that has intact dunes and the
typical Mediterranean vegetation of these places, the producer has considered of great importance that less than ten kilometers away is ample hotel infrastructure.

The City Council of Lepe values Walt Disney Pictures' interest in the
beaches of Lepe for this new production, for the economic benefit and
the arrival of equipment for something more than 300 people, as well
as the tourist promotional value that it will have for the
municipality and the fact that the location would appear in the
credits of the film.

The agreement between the City Council of Lepe and Walt Disney Pictures with Jerry Bruckheimer Films, that is predicted to be signed
 next March, will not include an economic contribution from the producer to the City of Lepe but the filming will provide publicity
and hiring of the extras that are necessary.

Also, it is predicted that Gore Verbinski will direct again. A small
scene is included that will be filmed in the old house of the captain
of ______ of New Shade, in which three historical pirates of the
Iberian Peninsula - Bartolomeo, the Portuguese; Alí Romero, the
Berberisco; and the Spaniard, Abraham Samuel, offer a glass of
Spanish wine to Captain Sparrow upon his arrival to the Spanish coast."

Noting this was a translation using AltaVista, I went directly to the website, and comparing the "translation" below with the Spanish I could see it didn't all correlate. I was also suspicious, since it said it used AltaVista to translate the Spanish article. I've used AltaVista a lot, and I know it doesn't get such "clean" translations without some human intervention. So I used AltaVista myself to translate this website from Spanish. Here is the result below. Turns out it is all just a Spanish version of an "April Fools" joke. Very funny.

The last joke in Lepe era of pirates

* The City council of Lepe said that ' Pirates of the Caribbean 4 '
would roll themselves there.
* Lepe usually spreads his ' inocentadá the 27 of December.
* The mayor was going to disguise itself of pirate and to act with
Johnny Depp.

"the North American producer Walt Disney Pictures negotiates with the City council of Lepe so that the next autumn the natural place Arrow of New Shade is used for the running of the new delivery of the Pirates of the Caribbean"... Thus the official official notice began that yesterday, 27 of December, headed the page Web of consistorio lepero.

The Arrow of New Shade, natural place near this locality, was according to the City council of Lepe the location chosen by Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films to roll the new adventures of captain Jack Sparrow.

The official notice also assured that the film would include "a small scene (...) in which three historical pirates (...) offer a glass of Spanish wine to Sparrow captain. The paper (...) could be interpreted of symbolic form by (...) the mayor of Lepe, Manuel Andrés González, and the councilmen Jesus Toronjo and Eliseo Arrayás ".

The department of press of the City council of Lepe confirmed that the news was "a joke", in addition of which inocentada "a day was its custom to carry out" before habitual, so that thus the all the average writings publish the 28 of December, ' Day of the Inocentes'.

Diverse national mass media, among them this newspaper in their version in paper and Web, therefore did it, taking to the confusion to their readers and making them thus also contributor of the joke and, with it, "innocents".
