We occasionally, though very sporadically, send out news of the pyrate world via the Cyber Seas. These online broadsheets are free to all who ask to join the email crew, though they are intended as a supplement to our "No Quarter Given" magazine. If you wish to join the email crew, or have news to share, just contact us. Notices are sent out irregularly, as piratical news warrants (and we have time), but they tend to come out about once or twice per month. Below are some past email notices. Pirates in Paradise

Blackbeard Pirate Memorial
Recap of Pyrate Daze at the Queen Mary
... and more
Ahoy me hearties,
Thanks to so many of you who came to our West Coast 15th Anniversary Party. It was the kick off event for Pyrate Daze on the Queen Mary. Thanks to There Be Pirates! who performed that night celebrating the release of their new album "Pirates in the Desert". What a beautiful night and what a great place for pirates to gather - in the Observation Lounge and out on the Queen Mary's decks. See more below about Pyrate Daze.
Now, although we just had our 2nd 15th Anniversary celebration (an anniversary can be celebrated the whole year, right? ... in fact, Disneyland took 18 months to celebrate their 50th anniversary), November 1st marked the 16th Anniversary for No Quarter Given. Our first issue was mailed out in Nov. 1993. Thanks to all of you who have supported us and contributed to No Quarter Given. If you missed out on those early years of No Quarter Given magazine, you can still get them in our Collected Volumes. For more details, see: http://www.noquartergiven.net/collection.htm

SAD NEWS
********
For those of you who were fans of the No Quarter Given PyRats, we are sad to
report that Capt. Bartholomew Roberts (aka Bart) on Oct. 22 moved on to
Fiddler's Green, in a nice tavern heaven full of cheese and rum. He is survived
by his shipmate and brother, Capt. Henry Morgan (Hank). [Aye ... we know he was
just a rat, but he did touch a lot of hearts in his brief 19 month life. That
little guy had a lot of personality and spirit.] You can view a lot of photos of
him at the PyRat's MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/nqgrats
PYRATE DAZE ON THE QUEEN MARY
****************************
Over 1000 of you came to spend a weekend celebrating all facets of pyracy. The
British navy lads defended the Queen Mary from a pirate invasion. Abney Park
successfully invaded Saturday evening for the Buccaneer Ball. Several other
musicians serenaded during the weekend - Rusty Cutlass, Rillian and the Doxie
Chicks, Willoughby Caught, and more. The Steampunk pirates invaded on Sunday.
Huzzah to Mitch Toles for organizing and hosting a great event. The Queen Mary
was a great venue - right on the water, with a great historic environment. The
vendors area with three levels and the open court in the middle was a great set
up. The music from the stage in the middle on the bottom level carried up to the
other levels with the great natural acoustics. http://blogs.laweekly.com/style_council/events/pirates-versus-steampunks-at-p/

PIRATE CAKE EPISODE ON ULTIMATE CAKE OFF

Huzzah to Kap'n Kula for his great appearance on TLCs "Ultimate Cake
Off" Pirate Cake episode. Kap'n Kula got to decide who won the $10,000. We
were unable to find out from Kap'n Kula if he took any bribes, but we are sure,
bein' the true pyrate he is, he did us proud.

September is "Pirate Month"
Pirate Cake Episode - Ultimate Cake Off
The Wolf's at the Door - Mallory & McCall

Ahoy me hearties,
You haven't heard much from us this summer. We've been busy working on our book "The Big Book of Pirate Stuff" - a kid's book about pirates. Deadline is Sept. 15. We've been deeply immersed in this project. I'm making this quick surfacing for air, to let you know of a few upcoming events and news. We will be ready to party hearty at Pyrate Daze - our book will have been turned in a few days earlier, and our publisher won't have gotten back to us yet for re-writes -- so we'll have a little breather to let loose with our pirate friends for Talk Like a Pirate Day weekend!
PYRATE DAZE AT THE QUEEN MARY

On Talk Like a Pirate Day weekend, pirates of all eras, from historical buccaneers to Steampunk fantasy, will commandeer the Queen Mary ship in Long Beach, CA. PYRATE DAZE is a new event, and will be a weekend of fun, music, dancing, celebrities, vendors, presentations, live sea battle with cannons, and more. A Masquerade Ball will be held on Saturday Night. Special musical guests are Abney Park. (If you are not familiar with their music, go to:
http://www.abneypark.com/, and click on their music videos. Start first with "Airship Pirate".) Sunday will be "Steampunk Sunday" - a chance to show off your latest Jules Vernian Airship Pyrate Victorian garb and goggles. No Quarter Given will be there with our booth in the vendors room. Come say 'ello.

PIRATE CAKE EPISODE ON ULTIMATE CAKE OFF
***********************************
At the recent Pier Daze Pyrate Invasion in June, the winner of the Ultimate Cake Off competition for The Learning Channel displayed his cake (it was actually two ships - depicting a battle at sea, 5 foot long). The pirates (headed off by the Port Royal Privateers) ceremoniously debuted the cake at the pirate festival. The show about this competition, and the debut of the cake at Pier Daze airs several times this week, starting on Mon, Aug. 31, at 10 pm. (It's also on
TLC-HD if you have that channel - check the times - they might be different).

THE WOLF IS AT THE DOOR
- Mallory & McCall need HELP!
*****************************
For those of you who have been following the saga of the pirate musicians Mallory and McCall, here is an update: We have kept him at bay for almost a year now, but the WOLF is at the door now. Their house is slated to be auctioned off on Sept. 8. Mallory is recently home from back surgery and is laid up for months. Jan is worn out, stressed out, and overwhelmed with the huge task of worrying about medical issues and taking care of Mallory. On top of that, she must now pack up, find a new place for them, move, etc. She is stuck without a car she is able to drive (their only working car is a stick shift, and she can't drive it.) See my blog for more details, and how you can help.

You can also send monetary donations through Paypal. Just "send money" to their email address at:

A HUGE thanks to all of you who have been helping, at the benefit concerts earlier this year, and through many other ways. I know a lot of us have landed on hard times this year, so this means more that you can reach out to help give back to a couple who have been part of the pirate community long before Jack Sparrow, even before Hook, hit the big screen.

TURNER'S TREASURE ISLAND ON DVD!
**************************************
Most pirate movie aficionados will say this version of Treasure Island is the best. This is the one with Charlton Heston as Long John, Oliver Reed as Billy Bones, Christopher Lee as Blind Pew, a young Christian Bale as Jim Hawkins and music by the Chieftains. As you watch, look carefully. The Treasure Island illustrations by N.C. Wyeth are faithfully staged through out the movie.
Turner has not released the DVD but Classic Tree Video has it:

They accept payment only via PayPal (free to sign up). Yours truly (Jamaica Rose) ordered a copy, and it came very quickly.

WOODEN BOAT RESCUE

In the latest issue of No Quarter Given magazine we featured an article about how the Blackbeard's Crew is refashioning an old boat into a pirate sloop. Perhaps your crew would like it's own pirate vessel. You might check with Wooden Boat Rescue. They are trying to find good homes for old, neglected wooden boats.

End of April Pirate Update

Pirates on Deadliest Warrior - TONIGHT
Pirates on the Wall Street Journal
Report on Benefits for Mallory &
McCall
NOLA Pyrate
Week report
and more ...
Ahoy me hearties,
Welcome on this particular day ... the death of Mary Read, and the Mutiny on
the HMS Bounty, both took place on today. There's been a lot of piratical
goings-on of late. And some about to happen. I was in the Wall Street Journal
yesterday in an article about pirates, and Michael will be on SPIKE TV tonight.
We spent two weeks on the road going to NOLA Pyrate Week, and there's been three
benefit events to help our friends Mallory and McCall. Read about these events,
and more, below.
PIRATE EPISODE OF DEADLIEST WARRIOR
***********************************
Check yer TV listings tonight for the PIRATES vs KNIGHTS episode of SPIKE TV'S
"DEADLIEST WARRIOR". It airs tonight (Apr 28) at 10 pm PT (with
repeats on Wed and later). See a trailer for the episode at: http://www.spike.com/video/pirate-1-of-2/3152770
In the pirate crew are Jefferson Wilmore (Jules Evermore), Tony Kopec (Laurens
de Graf), Frankie Angelillo (Figgins), Matt Stone (Sea Wolf), and Michael Lampe
(Michael MacLeod of No Quarter Given). You can catch glimpses of some of them in
the trailer. Also Master Gunner Gary Harper was involved.
PIRATES ON THE FRONT PAGE
OF WALL STREET JOURNAL
**************************
The front page of the April 27, 2009 issue of the Wall Street
Journal featured an article about how pirate re-enactors are reacting to the
pirates in Somalia situation:
http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB124078244486857161-lMyQjAxMDI5NDIwNjcyODYyWj.html
The reporter contacted us for our opinions. In the article my quote sounds like
I'm reluctant to say Somali pirates are true pirates because it looks bad for us
pirate-reenactors. But, the reporter left out my main point that the Somali
pirates have strong land-based connections and support from local tribal war
lords. It was this support that I thought disqualified them from being true
pirates. They are more like a mercenary navy of a nation without a government,
making war with the rest of the world.
Check out the online slide show for two photos of yours
truly. Also check out the comments sections (I loved the Trekkies comments).
Our congratulations to Cap'n Slappy who not only was
HEADLINED, but also got his photo in the print version of WSJ.

BENEFIT EVENTS FOR MALLORY & McCALL
************************
We've previously told you about Mallory and McCall <http://www.malloryandmccall.com>,
and their problems due to persistent health problems, and being scammed by a
fraudulent financial planner. They are now being threatened with foreclosure.
Several of their friends are determined that won't happen. Two benefit concerts
and a Bardic Luncheon have taken place in March and April. Together the three
events have raised over $3000. Thanks to all the bands who played (Captain Ron
Ely, Granuaille's Revenge, The Cherry Tarts, The Praties, Pirates of the Black
Swan, Saahira of the Emerald Winds, Rillian & the Doxie Chicks, Kapt. Kula's
Pyrat Party Band, The Black Spot, Mister Mac, The Dred Crew of Oddwood, the
Pirates Charles, and probably a few I forgot). Thanks to Maeve's Residuals in
Studio City, Ojai Renaissance Faire, and Harold's Pub in San Pedro for your
venues. Thanks to Sabre Steele, Krystal Rains, McAleenan, Myrna, Lady Suzanne,
and Robin St Graves for getting the ball rolling and organizing these events.
Thanks to all who came, donated, bought raffle tickets or bid on silent auction
items.
NOLA PYRATE WEEK
******************
We spent two weeks on the road going to NOLA Pyrate Week, March 28-April 5, http://www.pyrateweek.com.
There were pyrate parties, painting parties, pirate brunches, haunted pub tours,
volunteer efforts in the Lower Nine for the recovery of New Orleans, a Jean
Lafitte Swamp Tour, Pyrate Parade through the French Quarter (with brass bands,
bead cannons, classic cars, and floats), a Pyrates Ball in the Skull Club, a
Block Party, a dinner cruise aboard a paddlewheeler on the Mississippi River,
pyrate burlesque, and more.
Over $10,000 was raised for charities. Several pirates worked in the Lower Ninth
Ward for three days.
The No Quarter Given crew was excited to get out to see the REAL New Orleans,
not just the touristy French Quarter. Local pirates showed us around their city.
During all the festivities, we had the NO QUARTER GIVEN 15th Anniversary Party
at the Avenue Pub with Adult Buccaneer Bingo, The Pirates Charles, and the
Pyrates McKenna. Thanks to everyone who has helped us to have 15 wonderful
years.
See photos and read our blog on our MySpace at: http://www.myspace.com/no_quartergiven
And look for an article in the upcoming No Quarter Given magazine.
Mark yer calendars for the 2nd Annual NOLA Pyrate Week, March 26-April 4, 2010.
The first weekend will be at the Leukemia Regatta on Lake Ponchartrain (on the
water, with ships). Second weekend will be a pirate festival in a park. With
three days of volunteering during the week in between, along with parties, pub
crawls, historical tours and more. Keep an eye on the website for further
developments. http://www.pyrateweek.com

able to find Bart wearing his pirate hat and looking through his spyglass. Click
the VOTE word next to him. You can do so once every day in April (just a few
days left). Bart is currently in FIRST PLACE at 14%, just one percentage above
second place at 13%. But this can easily change. Help keep Bart in FIRST PLACE.

NEW PIRATE SHOP IN ST. AUGUSTINE
********************************
Congratulations to pirate photographer Tiger Lee on his new store. He has set
anchor in the historical district of St. Augustine, FL, and opened up a new
pirate-themed store and old-time photography studio. St Augustine is the oldest
continuously occupied European established city in the US, founded in 1565, so
it seems most appropriate. You can find his new shop in the old Spanish Plaza,
at:
100 St George Street, Suite I
(SW corner of Hypolita Street)
St Augustine, FL 32084
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To celebrate his new location, Tiger Lee has monthly pub crawls In Garb, each
2nd Friday of the month. Each month a different charity benefits from the funds
raised. For more details see: http://www.pirateportraitsntreasures.com/ingarbpubcrawl.html
BUCCANEERS OF TORTUGA
*********************
The Buccaneers of Tortuga gathered to invade San Juan Capistrano, as did
Hippolyte Bouchard and his pirate crew in 1818. They marched in the Swallows Day
Parade in San Juan Capistrano (CALIFORNIA) on Sat. March 21, 2009. The NQG crew,
including the PyRATs Bart and Hank, were there. Unfortunately our leaders Armand
and Pirahna Swann Kidd were absent (due to a class, and illness respectively).
Duncan MacInya stepped in a the grand pirate captain leading us down the parade
route. We had our beautiful new banner created by Brea Tar Sweeny, lots of
flags, and the NQG rolling barrel cart (pulled so bravely by Brandon). Rillian
and the Doxie Chix provided us tunes to sing and dance too.
Bastard Bob made the opening photo of the slide show on the OC Register's home
page Sunday. (I notice they didn't mention his oh-so-family-friendly name).
You can find the slide show at: http://www.ocregister.com/articles/swallows-day-parade-2342519-takes-flight-in-san-juan
Further in the slide show is a photo of Michael MacLeod with Capt. Henry Morgan
(Hank).
Mid-February Pirate Update
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Benefit Concert for Mallory & McCall
L.O.R.E.
Pyrate Week in New Orleans
and more ...
Ahoy Crew,
Despite being the dead of winter, there is a lot of piratical fun going on. This Saturday (Feb. 21), we'll be at a Benefit Concert of Mallory and McCall - we hope to see many of you there (see below for details).
The following weekend (Feb. 28-March 1) is the L.O.R.E. Immersion Weekend of workshops (again see below) where NQG is hosting the pirate track of classes.
That same weekend is the first ever Kansas City Pirate's Ball where a lot of the mid-west pirates will be gathering. But if you haven't gotten your tickets yet, sad to tell you, but it is SOLD OUT.
At the end of March starts Pyrate Week in New Orleans, where NQG is celebrating our 15th Anniversary of publication. We're excited about our plans for the party, and hope to see many of you there (again, see below for more details).
We won't be out and about so much this year. NQG is curtailing the number of events and shows we'll be at because we have a book contract!! Our deadline is this September. For details on our book, "THE BIG BOOK OF PIRATE STUFF", you can read our blog on our MySpace page at: http://www.myspace.com/no_quartergiven (find Blog section in upper right).
For No Quarter Given subscribers, be aware the latest issue was mailed out about 2 weeks ago. Many of you will have gotten your issue already, while others of you will get it soon. Remember, if you are a bulk subscriber, it can take up to 30 days or more to arrive. This issue is the July/August 2008 issue. With our book negotiations behind us now (and a big learning curve, just finding out about publishing contracts), we are on an accelerated schedule to get the magazine out, one per month, until we get caught back up with our schedule.
If you'd like to see what we did last weekend at the Dicken's Festival in
Riverside (though not piratical), go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gRlg1v1EKg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzS4nptzyp4&feature=channel (thanks to Black
Sam).
I'm in the ice blue silk gown, not moving very fast, as it's the end of the
night, and my old war wound is complaining. Cap'n Michael is in the grey tux,
with the long loose locks. You'll also see Scarlett Harlott, Lycan, Kendra of
Pirate Master in brown, and Pirelli from Sweeney Todd in blue with gold trim.
MUSICAL BENEFIT FEB. 21
This Saturday
************************
In past newsletters we have told you of the struggles of Mallory and McCall <
http://www.malloryandmccall.com/
determined that won't happen. Come help us help Mallory & McCall, and have
an enjoyable time doing so.
Come for an afternoon and evening of rollickin' pirate & seafarin' music to
benefit long time faire musicians Mallory & McCall.
In addition to the great line up of music from many Southern California pirate,
faire, seafaring, and folk bands, we will be raffling off some unique plunder
and pirate treasures.
; 818-761-8301; It’s between Vineland and Tujunga in a strip mall on the S
side of the street, close to Talderoy's tattoo parlor "Studio City
me (Jamaica Rose) please. No Quarter Given will be there, and so will the NQG
PyRATs, Bart and Hank.
"TREASURE ISLAND" WITH CHARLTON HESTON
**************************************
[From Cap'n John:]
In the past I spoke of how I found it amazing that the folks at Turner have yet
to release this version of "Treasure Island" (The best version I.M.O.)
onto DVD.
After some research and speaking with the film's director, I find that Warner
Home Video now owns the rights to the film. Warner bought Turner Home
Entertainment a while back and are the ones who can release their films.
So if you want to see this film on DVD as I do, start writing Warner Home Video
and request they release this great film on DVD. Since next year marks the 20th
Anniversary of it's release, I think we should ask that they release a
Director's Cut, complete with The making of...documentary, trailers, and all the
goodies that come with a DVD.
So start writing, Shipmates!!!!
Write to the following:
Warner Home Video
4000 Warner Blvd.
Burbank, Ca. 91522
I also left a message on their website. So we can do both the website and letter
writing. Let's see this happen!
UPDATE ON LINDA LEA
*******************
Linda Lea, the lass who was stranded in Ecuador, finally got a crew together
(Mister Mac -- huzzah, and others) left Ecuador on Jan. 28, and is sailing to
New Orleans, Grace willing, in time for the NOLA Pyrate Week aboard her sail
boat. By now, they should have made it through the Panama Canal. We look forward
to meeting you there lass.
"We took the City Called La Serena of 7 Churches and a Chappell; stayed in it 3 days, took much provision and some church plate, very rich Church robes. The bay is Covered with gold dust." -- Basil Ringrose from his "South Sea Waggoner". He neglects to tell that before they left, he and his band of fellow buccaneers set the town on fire because a promised ransom was not forthcoming.
