Pirates: The Untold Story of the Whydah from Slave Ship to Pirate Ship”
Norfolk, VA.
Nauticus
This
world premier exhibit
organized by National Geographic tells the compelling
story of the Whydah, a real pirate ship that began as a slave ship, and
the stories of the diverse people whose lives converged on the vessel.
Sunk in a fierce storm off the coast of Cape Cod in April 1717, the Whydah was
located by underwater explorer Barry Clifford in 1984, becoming the first fully
authenticated pirate ship to be discovered in American waters. The exhibition,
with more than 200 treasures recovered from the wreck, will provide visitors
with an unprecedented glimpse into unique economic, political and social
circumstances of the early 18th-century Caribbean and the inextricable link
between the slave trade and piracy. Over 150 artifacts from the first
authenticated pirate shipwreck found in American waters! , See real pirate
weaponry such as cannons and grenades , Touch actual pirate treasure! , Board a
re-creation of the Whydah to see pirate living quarters and experience life on
board!

Day Parade
San Juan Capistrano, CALIFORNIA
Time: Arrive no later than 9:30 am to have time to park and sign in. Parade
starts at 11 am.
Not a pirate event, but No Quarter Given
(including our PyRats) will be marching in the parade with the Alliance of the Double Cross, Buccaneers of
Tortuga, and other brethren of the sea to
welcome the return of the swallows to San Juan Capistrano. Pirates did raid San Juan Capistrano in 1818, so there is a
piratical connection. Parade starts at 11 am, but come much earlier to get
good parking. Street closures are at 10 am. Day-long street festival
with food and entertainment in the Mercado. There is basically one pirate
entry (number 1774) for the parade and ALL PIRATES regardless of their “group”
are invited to march in that entry. Last year the group that took the lead for
pirate participation was the Buccaneers of Tortuga, this year it will be the
Alliance of the Double Cross. According to the event rules we can not fire
weapons. Parade rule # 15 states that there shall be no distributing or throwing
of any merchandise or articles in the line of march. any such activity will
result in immediate disqualification. This includes candy, trinkets, etc. (http://www.swallowsparade.com/pdf/ApplicationParadeInfoAndRules.pdf
). Assembly Point: At the entrance (driveway) to the Calvary Chapel on El Camino
Real. This is just north of San Juan Elementary School. Get to the assembly area
no later than 10 am. You must go there and sign a liability release in order to
be in the parade. We should be listed as the Alliance of the Double Cross entry
number 1774. 10 am is the finish time for that activity, so get there early.
(map- http://www.swallowsparade.com/pdf/2007/parademap.pdf

2010: International Scurvy
Awareness Day
Many a sailor or pirate had to struggle with the symptoms of scurvy. Sad
to say, scurvy still exists. The humble goal of LimeStrong is to wipe out
what may possibly be the most easily preventable disease in human history,
Scurvy. They hope to achieve this by bringing awareness to the fact that Scurvy
still exists in the modern world, even though we have had a documented and cost
effective cure for almost 400 years. Plus, it’s a great excuse to have
some grog (rum punch with lime juice), or margaritas, with yer shipmates in the
name of a good cause. Visit the website for some great ideas to promote
the awareness of this day and the problem of scurvy. AND EAT A LIME! (or

attempt to repel the attack with artillery, muskets, and swords. Once the
pirates have invaded and convinced the townfolk and children to seek the riches
of their lost treasure, the children will be involved in a day-long drama to
find the hidden plunder that will include a Crew Muster and Pirate Costume
Contest, and a Treasure Hunt that will take the children through businesses of
the in-town area as they search for the Lost Treasure of the Mystic Pirates.

transform today’s Hampton into the busy seaport of yesterday. Led by
Blackbeard the Pirate himself, re-enactors help visitors step back in time and
re-live the history and legends of 1718 Hampton. This year the Blackbeard Pirate
Festival is part of the special festivities in celebration of the 400th
Anniversary of Hampton. To honor the 400th Anniversary of Hampton, the
Blackbeard Pirate Festival will be extended over three days and will include
live entertainment performed by a national act, never before seen historical reenactments,
and two spectacular displays of fireworks.

August
early, 2010: Pyrate
Invasion
Beaufort, NORTH CAROLINA
[until we get updated information for 2010, here are details from the 2009 listing]
Pyrates will soon be invading this seaport town and once again this historic
community will relive its past when Spanish privateers invaded the harbor in
August 1747. Now, centuries later, the old port town will be authentically
transformed while reliving the Pryate Invasion of its Colonial past. History
will again repeat itself when Capt. Sinbad and Crew will be defend the town from
the scallywags from Blackbeard’s Crew, Shadow Players, Braze, Devilmen of Cape
Fear and Carolina Black Flaggers. The pillage and plundering begins on the
afternoon of Friday, August 7 at the Beaufort Historic Site in the center of
downtown where an authentic Pyrate Encampment bustles with activity when the
real Brethren of the Sea and wenches set up their living quarters. Drink
some grog and eat some vittles at their encampment that evening beginning at
5:30 PM. … Admission is free into the Beaufort Historic Site but if you’d
like to feast on the Roland’s famous Fish and Chicken Fry, then you will need
to purchase a ticket. Tickets are only $15 per person. A cash bar for beer, wine
and water will be available on the grounds. Live music will be provided by
The Rusty Cutlass along with entertainment from the pyrates of Blackbeard’s
Crew, Shadow Players, Braze, Devilmen of Cape Fear and Carolina Black Flaggers.
Saturday, August 8 is Pyrate Invasion Day! The encampment comes alive at 10:00
AM. Witness pyrate demonstrations and reenactments throughout the day. Costume
contests for kids 12 and under will be held throughout the day on the grounds of
the Beaufort Historic Site. Before the Battle for Beaufort takes place
everyone is invited to show off their finest pyrate garb during the Pyrates on
Parade beginning at 1:00 PM. Join pyrates from near and far to march from the
Beaufort Historic Site to Front Street to Grayden Paul Park to cheer on Capt.
Horatio Sinbad and Crew aboard the Meka II when they sail into Taylor’s
Creek. The melee begins with cannons and muskets firing on the town while
the town militia battles the invaders from long boats and there might even be a
sword fight battle to witness. After the battle captured pyrates will be
escorted back to the Beaufort Historic Site to stand trial.
History records show that nearly 100 local farmers and townsfolk joined the
small band of militiamen in the defense of the town. The result was victory over
the invading pyrates! It is said that some of the pyrates were buried in the Old
Burying Ground located on Ann Street.
The day concludes with a gala celebration of the town’s victory at the North
Carolina Maritime Museum, 315 Front Street during the Buccaneer’s Ball. This
ticketed event begins at 7:30 PM and will feature live music by The Rusty
Cutlass with hors d’oeuvres by Molly Simmons and a cash bar. Tickets are $35
per person. Come celebrate in costume with the townspeople and share some grog,
eat some vittles and dance a jib with your favorite pyrate.

Johnston’s Pirates Days
Alexandria Bay, NEW YORK
[until we get updated information for 2010, here are details from the 2009 listing]
Welcome to Alexandria Bay, in the beautiful Thousand
Islands, New York. Alexandria Bay is home of Boldt Castle, situated on Heart
Island, and the proud home of the Famous “Bill Johnston’s Pirate Days.”
The following is a list of our 10 days filled with family fun and special
events. The sword-fighting group, known as the “Tales from Remikreh,” will
be performing throughout the Village streets and at various Route 12 locations.
Life size chessboard.
Bill Johnston was a renegade
after the patriots war, who blew up the British steamer, Sir Robert Peel, hid
among the 1000 Islands, and was hunted by both U.S. and Canadian authorities.
The annual Bill Johnston's Pirates Days celebration commemorates some of his
exploits. Fill your senses with the sound and spectacle when pirate ships attack
the village from the St. Lawrence River, as the brave villagers try to stave
them off. The air is filled with smoke and the sound of musket fire and cannon,
and eventually the villagers succumb as the pirates invade the town. After the
mayor turns over the key to the village to the invading marauders, everyone
becomes a pirate.
You are invited to join in the spirit of Pirate Days and
dress as a Pirate, Patriot, or Indian when attending any or all of these events.
All times are subject to change. Please check the Event Board at the
Entertainment Tent or at the Chamber Office at (315) 482-9531. A band of Sword
Fighting Pirates will be available during all 10 days at most events listed for
photo opportunities. The Tales from Remikreh group will be throughout the
Village so BEWARE! Most events are free and for the enjoyment of the public.

September

of Emerson, a Halloween Adventure
Fremont, CALIFORNIA
[until we get updated information for 2010, here are details from the 2009 listing]
We are completely unlike the traditional haunted house; we have taken this to a
much, much higher level. At our Dark Adventure, we have created an environment
where you are actually in the scenes. We have made extensive use of special
effects, robotics, animation and interaction. While we do have the obligatory
scream in your face areas - they are relatively small. Some of the
animation may be a bit intense for those of an impressionable age and we do not
recommend our attraction for those under 13 years old. We do not use blood and
guts for effect, (well not very much), but after experiencing the Adventure you
will never miss them. This is an extremely scary event. 45021 WarmSprings
Blvd, Fremont, CA. Tickets can be purchased online at the website.

or near November 22, 2010: 3rd Annual Blackbeard Pirate Memorial
Ocracoke, NORTH CAROLINA
Time: 2 pm
[until we get updated information for 2010, here are details from the 2009 listing] Pirates Return to Ocracoke 291 Years After the Death of Blackbeard to Remember
Their Fallen Brethren. For only the 2nd time in 291 years, the
historically significant “Battle of Ocracoke” and the death of the notorious
pirate Blackbeard will be memorialized on Ocracoke Island. The observance will
be conducted on a soundside sandy beach adjacent to Ocracoke’s Springer’s
Point, near the location of the 1718 engagement at Teaches Hole Channel. Pirate
living-history reenactors, dressed in period attire replete with cutlasses,
flintlock pistols and cannon, will assemble at the site for a 45-minute ceremony
featuring an elegy, period music, a specially-composed pirate chanty, the
floating of a wreath and military-like honors for the 23 pirates and King’s
sailors who were killed in the battle. The annual event was created in 2008 by
members of Blackbeard’s Crew and by Kevin Duffus, a Raleigh, North Carolina,
historian and author of the book, The Last Days of Black Beard the Pirate. Among
the many new theories presented in his book, Duffus believes that the 23 bodies
belonging to Blackbeard and the others killed at Ocracoke in 1718 were buried in
a mass grave near where the 2009 memorial event will be held. A solemn one-mile
procession to the event site will begin at 1:30 p.m. from Blackbeard’s Lodge
in Ocracoke village at 111 Back Rd. Those attending are encouraged to gather at
1 p.m. at Blackbeard’s Lodge. Last minute information and contingency plans,
if necessary, will be announced at that time. There is no public parking near
the ceremony site but some limited shuttle service may be available. Non-pirates
are encouraged to ride bicycles. On November 22, 1718, two hired merchant sloops
manned by 60 Royal Navy sailors from Virginia engaged the notorious pirate
Edward Thatch, aka Blackbeard and his 20 shipmates near Ocracoke Inlet, North
Carolina. Following a brief gun battle and hand-to-hand combat lasting fewer
than six minutes, 12 pirates were killed including Blackbeard, and nine men were
captured. Eleven of the King’s men were killed.

November through early December, 2010: PIRATES IN PARADISE
Key West, FLORIDA
[until we get updated information for 2010, here are details from the 2009 listing] Key West and the Conch Republic welcome the 10th Annual Pirates in Paradise
Festival. Top-name quality entertainment and historic re-enactors,
improvisational actors, and combative stunt men from around the country
(including Cascabel, whose portrait by Don Maitz is the artwork for our Festival
program cover) are set to invade the island. As you stroll the streets of Old
Town's colorful seaport taverns and pirate pubs such as Schooner Wharf Bar, Pat
Croce's Rum Barrel at Pirate Soul and the Green Parrott or visit Fort Zachary
Taylor's Pyrate Fest and Village Market (Friday thru Sunday, December 4 - 6),
don't be surprised if you run into the likes of Anne Bonny, Bawdy Be, Braze,
Cascabel, Sir Henry Morgan, The Pyrates of the Coast, the Bone Island Buccaneers
(Key West's own pirate crewe) and other nefarious Brethren of the Coast.
The Schooner WOLF, the flagship of the Conch Republic, is
ready to take you out on the water. Aboard the WOLF, you'll be able to
experience life upon the sea, complete with pirates, cannon fire and small arms
fire. Pirates in Paradise is more than just pirates! Celebrating the city's
maritime history and heritages, you can learn more about the ghosts that once
walked these streets, tour a historic submarine hunter, the USS Mohawk, which
signaled the start of the D-Day Invasion, celebrate the end of Hurricane Season
with the traditional burning of the hurricane warning flags, and mingle with
well known artists, writers and entertainers who have helped create and keep
alive the mystique of Key West, including Sandra Riley, Don Maitz, and the
"Queen of Swing" Norma Miller.
Participate in the 5th Annual National Walk the Plank
Championships where the Pyrates of the Coast let you sample the beautiful waters
of Key West as you are forced to walk the plank of the WOLF.
Enter the 2nd Annual Bone Island Buccaneer Pirate Olympics
and see if you can master the skills of a pirate.
Historical trial of Anne Bonny and Mary Read, the two most
famous women pirates in history will take place in the Old City Hall.
This year our own Conch Republic Navy USO Girl - and one of
the stars of the Pyrate Tryal of Anne Bonny! - 'Queen of Swing' Norma Miller
turns 90. This is her 10th year of returning to Key West to celebrate her
birthday with the pirates and this year Norma is bringing along Lou Ragland's
World Famous INK SPOTS to help celebrate! Norma and the INK SPOTS will be making
guest appearances at many of our special events and on Sunday, December 6 they
invite you to join them at the CLOUD Night Club in Old Town Key West for a
special Variety Show and Concert.
