Firth, C. H., Naval Songs and Ballads [Navy Records Society, London, 1908] Contains 2 ballads on Capt. Avery/Every & his men.

Frank, Stuart M. The Book of Pirate Songs, [Kendall Whaling Museum, Sharon, MA 1998] Very complete, scholarly collection of songs about pirates from the 16th - 19th centuries. Well illustrated with engravings from period sheet music, broadsides, and other sources. Though scholarly, this book is very approachable, and the background notes are fascinating. Music is provided for most songs, with chords. Well indexed, with an extensive bibliography.##.

Harlow, F. P., The Making of a Sailor
, [Marine Research Soc., Salem, MA, 1928]. A journal of his adventures at sea, it contains some chanties with music.**

Hugill, Stan, Shanties from the Seven Seas, [E. P. Dutton & Co, NY, 1961]. Very comprehensive book, giving words and music. Explains when different types of shanties were used.**

Hugill, Stan, Songs of the Sea: the Tales and Tunes of Sailors and Sailing Ships, [McGraw-Hill Book Co., 1977] Songs with accompanied by background introductions explaining their use and the nautical lore behind them. #

Masefield, John, anthology, A Sailor’s Garland [London, 1908; New York, 1924]. Has a very useful selection.#

Palmer, Roy, Oxford Book of Sea Songs. [Oxford Univ. Press, Oxford, NY, 1986] No chanteys, just songs. Some music given. Some songs pirate-themed.#

Shay, Frank, American Sea Songs & Chanteys,, , [Norton & Co., 1948]. Gives words, some music. Some pirate-themed.**
